I'm building a new OEM WHS 2011 server. I first installed it one one box, entered the serial number, and it looked like it activated online. I am having hardware issues with the first box, so I took the hard disk from the first box, installed it into a second box, and did a full, clean installation of WHS 2011. For some reason, when I entered the serial number for the second box, I get an invalid serial number message although I know the number I entered is correct. Did activating it the first time on the first box 'use up' that serial number? How can I activate it on the second box?

Thanks in advance. Your product key is tied to your hardware at the time of activation, and can't be moved to new hardware. While it's possible to change some of the hardware without invalidating the activation, moving to a different box, installing, and trying to activate again won't work. Instead, you're offered an option when you try to activate and fail to call Microsoft; this is called 'phone activation', and while your product key is in theory locked to the first set of hardware you install on, they've been very understanding about moving to new hardware in the past.
